A Weekend Escape to Daylesford | Fine Wine, French Cuisine & the Luxury of Slowing Down

There are some places that instantly make you exhale the moment you arrive.
For me, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs have always been among them.
This past weekend I escaped Melbourne for a few peaceful days in the country, returning to a region that has long held a special place in my heart. After having a holiday home in Hepburn Springs for a short time, every visit feels wonderfully familiar. The fresh country air, winding roads and slower pace are the perfect reminder that life doesn't always need to move so quickly.
Our home for the weekend was the beautiful Poets Lodge, an elegant 1920s colonial residence full of warmth, history and timeless charm. One of my favourite discoveries inside the house was its beautiful library.
I've always loved reading. I find there's something incredibly calming about escaping into another world while surrounded by fresh country air. A comfortable chair, a wonderful novel and a quiet afternoon are every bit as luxurious to me as a five-star dinner. It's one of the reasons I enjoy country escapes so much, they invite you to slow down, breathe deeply and simply lose track of time.
Friday evening unfolded exactly as I'd hoped.
We wandered into Bistro Terroir, settled beside the window and watched the gentle pace of Daylesford drift by. It was one of those evenings where conversation flowed as effortlessly as the wine.
I began with freshly shucked oysters before ordering one of my favourite dishes—steak tartare. Beautiful French wine accompanied dinner and, naturally, a glass of champagne found its way to the table as well.
If you know me, you'll know I have a soft spot for exceptional French cuisine shared with wonderful company.
Saturday was wonderfully unhurried.
We spent the afternoon grazing at Winespeake Cellar & Deli, somewhere I visited often when I lived in Hepburn Springs. Their carefully curated wine collection has always impressed me, and I never seem to leave without discovering another bottle to enjoy later. Add artisan cheeses, charcuterie and local delicacies, and you have everything needed for a perfect afternoon.
Sunday morning was reserved for another favourite tradition—the Daylesford Sunday Market.
I wandered through the stalls collecting fresh vegetables, local produce and a few irresistible treats before taking the scenic drive home through Woodend. It's these simple moments that often become my favourite memories.
Weekends like this remind me that life's greatest luxuries are often the simplest.
Beautiful food.
Fresh country air.
A wonderful book.
Meaningful conversation.
And sharing those experiences with someone whose company feels effortless.
