Fly Me To You

Flying gives me time to think. More importantly, it gives my mind time to slow down, which is rare for me. My mind is always busy, rushing from one thought to the next, usually several thoughts ahead of where I actually am.

My life is busy. Actually, it’s hectic. Even chaotic at times, but I'm not complaining, there always is something to do. Someone to meet. An article to write. Somewhere to be. Someone to call. Something I’ve forgotten that needs my attention.

There is always something.

Perhaps that’s why I love flying so much. Most people seem to despise it.

Fly me to you. Some of my favourite journeys begin with an invitation.

I often hear, “How can you stand it? How do you cope with all those long flights?”

Very easily. In fact, the longer the flight, the happier I am. Once I’m on board, I stop. I have no choice but to slow down, and that is the best.

I love the me time a flight gives me. I love that I don’t have to feel guilty for being lazy or sitting in one spot for hours. There’s nowhere else I’m supposed to be and nothing else I’m supposed to be doing. I don’t even have to get up to pour myself a champagne. Someone brings it to me.

Who wouldn't like that? I love it.

I feel so at home in the air, and that’s exactly why travelling for me. For however many hours I’m flying, the world can carry on without me. I can read. Write. Watch something. Stare out the window. Think about absolutely nothing.

And just relax.

I enjoy the luxury of flying commercially, and strangely, I feel much the same way when I’m flying myself. There’s something quite exciting about climbing into my little Cessna, putting on my headset and chatting away to the tower while I prepare to depart.

Of course, it isn’t exactly a “Welcome on board” sort of conversation. It’s pilot jargon, coordinates, instructions and clearances, but I love it all the same.

I get such a thrill listening to the other pilots conversing with the tower while I sit on the runway waiting for permission to take off. That will never get old.

Then I hear the words.

“Cleared for take-off.”

Throttle forward, and off I go.

Flying gives me a kind of freedom that I find difficult to explain.

Once I'm up there, It feels like another world. Admittedly, flying long distances can be boring at times. I sometimes wonder how commercial pilots don't seem to get bored on those incredibly long international flights. Then I look at horizon ahead, see the sunrise or a sunset, and the beauty below, and it all makes complete sense.

It’s beautiful up there.

Above the clouds, away from everything, there is an extraordinary sense of space and freedom. For a little while, I'm moving through the sky, almost like a bird or a butterfly.

When I’m flying myself, that feeling becomes even stronger.

I can choose where I’m going. I can change my route. I can decide to explore somewhere different, within the rules of flying, of course. There is a feeling in the open sky that I can't explain and I just feel free.

I don’t fly myself nearly enough these days. I swapped flying for study for a short time. You'll see me flying overhead again very soon. Until then, I’ll happily be a passenger.

Some invitations are simply too tempting to decline. Fly me to you, and let’s make the destination part of our story.

Make me your co-pilot, or book me a comfortable seat. Fly me to you somewhere interesting and let's meet at the other end. I relish the luxury of a few uninterrupted hours where nobody expects me to do anything. In the air, I’m perfectly content.

So, if there’s somewhere in the world you’d like to share a little time with me, you are the perfect reason to board a flight.

As a Melbourne-based international companion, travelling to meet someone somewhere wonderful in the world feels very natural to me.

I also have a discreet travel agent who can quietly coordinate the details for us. Whether I’m flying to you or we’re planning an escape together, travel can be arranged seamlessly, leaving us with little more to think about than where we’d like to go and how long we’d like to stay.

Affectionately yours,

Rene x
